Regular Lay vs Lang Lay Wire Rope: Which One for Your Application?

Regular lay or Lang lay? Learn how lay type affects abrasion, fatigue, rotation and handling of steel wire rope, with a comparison table and application advice from CML SARL in Douala.
When you order a steel wire rope, the construction and diameter are only part of the specification. The lay type, regular lay or Lang lay, has a strong influence on how the rope resists wear, fatigue and rotation. Choosing the wrong lay can halve the service life of a rope or create dangerous twisting on a crane. In this guide, CML SARL explains the difference in plain terms and shows where each lay type works best in Cameroonian ports, mines and construction sites. ### What Does "Lay" Mean? Lay describes the direction in which wires are twisted into strands and strands are twisted into the rope. - **Lay direction** of the rope: right hand (strands go up to the right, like a Z) or left hand (like an S). - **Lay type**: the relationship between the wire direction in the strand and the strand direction in the rope. In **regular lay** (also called ordinary lay or cross lay), the wires in the strands are laid in the opposite direction to the strands in the rope. On the surface, the wires appear roughly parallel to the rope axis. In **Lang lay**, the wires in the strands are laid in the same direction as the strands in the rope. On the surface, the wires appear to run diagonally across the rope. Designations commonly used include sZ (right regular lay), zS (left regular lay), zZ (right Lang lay) and sS (left Lang lay), as defined in EN 12385-2. ### Regular Lay: Characteristics Regular lay is the most common lay type for general engineering ropes. - Good resistance to cru...
