Technical manual for SOLAS marine pyrotechnics: parachute rockets (30,000 cd), handheld flares, buoyant smoke canisters, and strict 36-month shelf-life replacement under IMO rules.

Marine pyrotechnics represent the time-tested visual distress signaling equipment of the international maritime world. In critical emergencies where vessel power is lost, electronics are submerged, or radio communication fails, high-intensity parachute rockets, handheld flares, and buoyant smoke canisters provide immediate, visible distress signals to passing ships and rescue aircraft. Governed by **SOLAS Chapter III** and the **IMO LSA Code**, marine pyrotechnics contain specialized chemical incendiary compositions capable of burning under water and piercing dense tropical fog. Because they contain explosive and pyrotechnic materials, handling, storing, and replacing flares requires strict adherence to statutory safety protocols. ## The Four Standard SOLAS Marine Pyrotechnic Devices ### 1. Rocket Parachute Flares - **Deployment:** Fired vertically into the night or day sky. A rocket motor propels the flare casing to an altitude of at least **300 meters**. - **Performance:** At peak altitude, an internal parachute deploys, suspending a brilliant red incendiary flare burning at **minimum 30,000 candela for at least 40 seconds**, with a descent rate not exceeding 5 m/s. - **Visibility:** Visible from over 30 nautical miles at night. ### 2. Handheld Red Flares - **Deployment:** Handheld signal designed for short-range visual homing when a rescue vessel or helicopter is within visual distance. - **Performance:** Burns with a brilliant red flame producing **minimum 15,000 cand...
