Immersion Suits and Thermal Protective Aids: Inspection Guide

Technical inspection manual for SOLAS immersion suits and TPAs: hypothermia protection standards (6h in 0°C water), zipper lubrication, and 3-year pneumatic pressure testing under MSC/Circ.1114.
When maritime disasters force crew members into the ocean, drowning is not the only immediate mortal threat; hypothermia is an equally lethal killer. In cold water, body heat loss occurs 25 times faster than in air of the same temperature. Unprotected immersion in water below 15°C induces cold shock, rapid muscle incapacitation within 10 minutes, and hypothermic coma within an hour. Under **SOLAS Regulation III/32.3** and the **IMO LSA Code**, commercial cargo vessels must provide an **approved immersion suit (anti-exposure suit)** for every person on board, plus supplementary suits at remote watch stations. Vessel safety officers and inspectors must ensure immersion suits remain 100% watertight, insulated, and mechanically functional. ## Immersion Suits vs. Thermal Protective Aids (TPAs) ### 1. SOLAS Immersion Suits (Anti-Exposure Suits) - **Construction:** Heavy 5 mm to 7 mm waterproof closed-cell neoprene or breathable waterproof trilaminate fabric equipped with high-buoyancy thermal insulation. - **Thermal Performance:** Must guarantee that a wearer's core body temperature does not fall by more than **2°C after 6 hours of continuous immersion** in calm water between 0°C and +2°C. - **Design Features:** Built-in neoprene boots, three-finger insulated mittens, watertight brass or heavy composite zipper running from groin to chin, face seal, retro-reflective tape, whistle, and water-activated SOLAS light. ### 2. Thermal Protective Aids (TPAs) - **Construction:** A metall...
